A pressure swing adsorption technology is used by oxygen concentrators and these are used to provide oxygen in healthcare applications at places where oxygen in a liquid form or that which is pressurized comes out as inconvenient and not so easy to be handled.Some concentrators are also based on membrane technology. At higher volumes, cryogenic separation happens. And, at smaller volumes, external delivery happens. High pressure is required for zeolite to absorb large quantities of nitrogen at high pressure. 

This is because of its large surface area and chemical character. After the oxygen has been collected, their is a drop in the pressure which allows the nitrogen to desorb. The components of an oxygen concentrator are an air compressor, two cylinders which are filled with zeolite pellets, a reservoir which equalizes pressure, tubes and some valves. In the first half of the cycle, air is received by the first cylinder from the compressor and it lasts about 3 seconds. During that time, the pressure that is there in the cylinder rises from atmospheric to 2.5 times of the atmospheric magnitude. By this time, the zeolite becomes saturated with nitrogen. As the first cylinder, reaches near pure oxygen, a valve is opened and the gas which is enriched with oxygen flows to the reservoir which allows nitrogen to be desorbed back into gas.
