Oxygen concentrator and CPAP machine are both used to soothe breathing problem and treat other similar medical conditions. Yet, the two devices are quite different from each other. While it is imperative to use the one recommended by your consulting doctor, it is important to know the difference between the two.

Read on to know the difference between the two. But before that here is a brief look at what these two devices have on offer. This will help understand the difference better.

What is an Oxygen Concentrator?

An oxygen concentrator is a portable device that draws air from the surroundings, removes nitrogen and supplies pure and rich oxygen to the patients. People suffering from medical conditions such as sleep apnea require more oxygen than present in the air. This is where the need for oxygen concentrator arises. The oxygen made available by an oxygen concentrator is taken in through a nasal cannula. Oxygen mask can also be used for the same. This helps in increasing the amount of oxygen in the body and thus soothes sleep apnea as well as certain other medical problems. The oxygen present in the oxygen concentrator can be delivered continually, intermittently or as pulse-dose based on the patient’s requirement.

What is a CPAP Machine?

CPAP is short for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. The machine includes a filter and a small water tank that acts as a humidifier. It also comes with a mask that is affixed to the face to take in oxygen. The mask and the machine unit are connected with the help of a tube. The machine is particularly recommended for those suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. It helps the patients breathe easy and have a sound sleep. The machine boosts the air pressure in throat that prevents the airway from collapsing during inhalation. CPAP machine is also known to decrease the problem of snoring.

Difference between Oxygen Concentrator and CPAP Machine

Oxygen concentrator and CPAP machine differs in functionality. They solve two different purposes. As mentioned above, an oxygen concentrator eliminates nitrogen and other gases from the air available in the surroundings to provide rich oxygen to breath. A CPAP machine on the other hand does not raise the amount of oxygen. This machine generates high pressure to ensure that the throat stays open and the obstructive sleep apnea problem is handled tactfully.

Simultaneous Use of Oxygen Concentrator and CPAP Machine

There are certain complicated medical conditions in which the doctors recommend the use of oxygen concentrator and CPAP machine simultaneously. One such example can be when a patient is suffering from pulmonary edema as well as obstructive sleep apnea. To cure this condition, the patient requires a constant flow of oxygen along with a device that creates pressure to open the throat. Using oxygen concentrator and CPAP machine together can solve both the purposes. The amount of oxygen in the ambient air will be increased with the help of an oxygen concentrator and pressure to keep the throat open shall be created by use of a CAPA and Bipap machine.

Blue Ocean Medtech provides high quality CPAP machines as well as oxygen concentrators to help cure various lung diseases and breathing problems.
